Leh Indian Glaciology Summer School (LIGSS-2025)

Last month, Dr. Lilian Schuster and myself had the opportunity to be guest instructors at the first ever Leh Indian Glaciology Summer School (LIGSS) in Ladakh, India. The theme of this year’s summer school was climate and glaciology.

Lilian and I gave lectures and tutorials on glacier modelling with OGGM and COSIPY, past and future glacier response to climate change, and high-resolution modelling of climate-glacier processes.

It was a pleasure to contribute to this initiative, led by Dr. Saurabh Vijay (IIT Roorkee), Dr. Argha Banerjee (IISER Pune) and Dr. Pankaj Kumar (IISER Bhopal), aimed at equipping local graduate students and early-career researchers with the skills needed to tackle pressing questions about how glaciers, water resources, and natural hazards in the Himalayas will change in a warming climate.

Our participation in LIGSS-2025 was generously supported by the Sai Asharaya Trust, the International Glaciological Society, and the International Relations Office at the University of Innsbruck. High-performance computing resources and other important technical support for the summer school were provided by Dr. Claudia Blaas-Schenner and the Austrian Scientific Computing (ASC; formerly known as the Vienna Scientific Cluster).
